What we collect when you visit the site and play the game, and why.

Effective date: 5 November 2026.

Who we are

This site and the Silt Strider game service are run by Black Salamander Studios, based in the United Kingdom. You can reach us at contact@blacksalamander.studio or on the contact page. Silt Strider is a fan project. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Bethesda Softworks.

The website

  • We set no cookies and use no browser storage. The one script on the site only shuffles the quotes on the home page. See the Cookies Policy.
  • We run no analytics and the site has no forms. Fonts, images and scripts are all served from the site itself.
  • The site is hosted by Cloudflare. Cloudflare processes visit data such as your IP address and browser details to serve and protect the site.
  • The download buttons send you on to Microsoft Azure storage, so Azure sees your IP address when you download.
  • Links to Discord, Patreon, YouTube and Nexus Mods load nothing until you click them. Those sites follow their own policies.

What we publish on the site

  • Announcements show the Discord name of the staff member who posted them.
  • Player quotes on the home page appear only with the player’s consent. To withdraw a quote, write to contact@blacksalamander.studio or message us on Discord.
  • The bugs page lists bug titles, status and dates from the public bug tracker. Player names are replaced in the titles. It shows no reporter name.
  • The mods page credits mod authors by name and links their own public donation pages. To have a name or link removed, write to contact@blacksalamander.studio.

The game

Playing needs a Discord sign-in in the launcher. The game servers run on machines rented from a third-party hosting provider. We handle the following.

  • Discord sign-in. We ask Discord for your Discord id, username and avatar details. We also ask for permission to add you to our Discord server (the guilds.join scope). The server checks that you are in the server, not banned, and hold the right role. No password is used.
  • Whitelist. The server keeps a whitelist keyed on your Discord id, with your Discord username.
  • Your character. The server saves your character: inventory, stats, quest progress, position and so on.
  • IP addresses. Each IP address your account connects from is saved with your character. We use IP addresses for connection limits and bans.
  • Playtime. We record hours played per Discord account.
  • Server logs. The server log records chat lines, with the chat name and the message, and sign-in refusals with your Discord username and id.
  • Discord chat bridge. On the live server, global out-of-character chat is relayed to a Discord channel, and chat from that channel is relayed into the game. Discord keeps what is posted there, and the game cannot delete it.

AI characters

Some non-player characters are driven by an AI model. When you talk to one, what you say is sent to Microsoft Azure AI Foundry together with game context so it can write the reply. That context includes your character name, quest state and what the character remembers about you. These characters remember past conversations, and that memory is stored on our server. Replies are generated and can be wrong. Microsoft’s standard terms for Azure apply to what it receives.

Bug and crash reports

  • An in-game bug report attaches the client log, the server log tail, the AI and Discord bridge logs, your character file (without the password), the cell file, system details such as platform and graphics hardware, and any screenshots or files you add.
  • Before upload, IP addresses, tokens and password values are removed. Names and chat stay in, so other players’ chat may appear in the attached log.
  • The full report goes to a private forum that only the team can read. A public copy keeps the title and status, with player names replaced.
  • After a crash the game offers a crash report window. Nothing is sent unless you press Send. If you press Skip, it is deleted.

Who we share data with

  • Discord, for sign-in, the server community and the chat bridge.
  • Cloudflare, which hosts the site.
  • Microsoft Azure, for downloads, game content and AI replies.
  • GitHub, which builds the site from our repository.
  • Our hosting provider, which runs the game servers.

We do not sell your data.

How long we keep data

  • Your sign-in ticket lasts 30 days and is extended each time you use it.
  • Character files and saved IP addresses: kept indefinitely, with no automatic deletion, unless you ask us to delete them.
  • Server logs: kept indefinitely, with no automatic deletion, unless you ask us to delete them.
  • Bug report files: kept indefinitely, with no automatic deletion, unless you ask us to delete them.
  • AI character memory and playtime: kept indefinitely, with no automatic deletion, unless you ask us to delete them.

Your choices and requests

  • To ask for your data to be exported or deleted: write to contact@blacksalamander.studio from any address and give your Discord username. Staff check the request against your Discord account and handle it by hand.
  • You can delete a character in the game’s login menu. Playtime and AI character memory may still keep your character’s id.
  • You can leave our Discord server at any time. Posts already made there remain until Discord or our staff remove them.

Children

You must be at least 18 to use this site and play. A Discord account is required, and Discord’s own minimum age applies.

Changes
